手板模型亦稱首板，即產品的首個樣板。早在七十年代香港開始有手板興起，因早時都用手工制作為主，因而得名曰"手板"，其實叫首板更為準確。九十年代后期，特別是近幾年，我國經濟突飛猛進，工業(yè)設計的興起，手板業(yè)開始興起。手板雖小，作用卻非常大，一是體現設計思維，二是展覽會展示，三是檢驗模具結構。 
       手板廠介紹早期的手板因為受到各種條件的限制，主要表現在其大部分工作都是用手工完成的，使得做出的手板工期長而很難嚴格達到外觀和結構圖紙的尺寸要求，因而其檢查外觀或結構合理性的功能也大打折扣。隨著科技的進步，CAD和CAM技術的快速發(fā)展,為手板制造提供了更加好的技術支持，使得手板的精確成為可能。另一方面，隨著社會競爭的日益激烈，產品的開發(fā)速度日益成為競爭的主要矛盾，而手板制造恰恰能有效地提高產品開發(fā)的速度。正是在這種情況下，手板制造業(yè)便脫穎而出，成為一個相對獨立的行業(yè)而蓬勃發(fā)展起來。
